PREPARING FOR SETBACKS

As you are on this journey to life and health, you will experience setbacks. Let’s face it, life happens. We cannot control life’s circumstances, but we can prepare for setbacks. Preparing will help us not get off track and help us to keep moving forward.

Ouch My Heel Hurts

Years ago, after attending and speaking at the Retrofit Ministries Faith-&-Fitness Retreat, I came home and added walking for 30-60 minutes a day to my normal routine of swimming 5-6 days a week, with Sundays as my normal rest day. I can tell you I hated to walk back then. Even before I lost 255 lbs, I would park my car extremely close to any place I needed to go into, or I would just order everything online and have it delivered to the comfort of my apartment.

Why? Because walking was hard on my joints and I did not like my fat rubbing raw or chafing from sweating. Jokingly yet truthfully, I would say, “It’s not the fat going up that hurts, it’s when it slaps back down.” Anyway, one day my heel was hurting really bad after walking for about an hour, so I decided to rest my foot and just swim the next day. I did not want to get off track. I wanted to preserve the integrity of my weight loss progress. That one small thing could have turned into a major setback, but I chose to be smart and rest the hurt heel and just swim. After some much needed rest the next day and a new pair of sneakers, I was ready to go.

Setbacks Happen

A friend of mine was very upset that she had not been losing weight due to physical setbacks, which seemed to consistently happen every time she started working out hard and seeing results. Once, it was her left ankle and a few months later it was her right heel. Trust me, she is a fighter and many times she would just fight through the pain she was in. But there were many times that the pain was too great for any major exercise. The setbacks seemed devastating to her, but there were other exercises and ways she could workout so her weight loss progress could keep moving forward and not stop.

3 Ways To Prepare For Setbacks

  1. Know that there are going to be setbacks.
  2. Have a list of optional exercises you can do if it’s a physical setback.
  3. Relax, it’s not a sprint. It’s a marathon.

My Thot: Setbacks are a given. Anytime you are moving forward or progressing in your life, setbacks happen. The thing to remember is to always be prepared on how to handle them. Don’t get discouraged or throw in the towel. You will get through this. As the saying goes, “This Too Shall Pass.” Comment below and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE to receive blog updates in your inbox.
