So Many Voices
There are a lot of voices, information, and knowledge that all of us have access to twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The saying that with knowledge comes power is a lie unless you apply what you’ve learned. I know a number of people who have great information and truth, yet never apply it. Head knowledge is good but practical application of that knowledge is better. BEST, is when a combination of both causes experiences that produce amazing, sustainable, calculated results.
The Apostle Paul encourages us to renew our minds.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Romans 12:2
How To Rest Your Mind
Unplug From Social Media & Technology
This is a huge one for many people. Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, TV, etc. Social Media offers a lot of information and stuff that’s not always reliable. Too many people are influenced by the fake news, and the fake lives that people portray on the internet. People tend to show you only what they want you to see. Most of these relationships we have are shallow and not deep at all. Unfortunately, we put too much value on these shallow relationship and not enough value on the people that are actually around us. There is so many opinions about what is hot and what is not - in fashion, in politics, in fitness too. Body image is a biggie and there is a constant push for women to have voluptuous derrières or guys to have big muscular arms and six pack abs. There are so many opinions about how to lose weight, lose fat, build muscles, build a business or brand that we are being driven to crazy, stress filled behavior. I would recommend a 24 hour or longer media fast.
My Media Fast
A few years ago, I did 40 days of no Facebook. The first couple of days was hard. Then, eventually it got easy. Before I did this Facebook fast, I would check Facebook 10-15 times a day and I checked it on multiple platforms - from my phone and laptop, heck even my iPad. I was so addicted to social media that what seemed to be 20 minutes turned into multiple hours scrolling up and down my news feed. I couldn’t even go a few hours without thinking about my friends and posts on Facebook. I saw this addictive behavior in all my other social media activities as well, and I didn’t like it. I may be on social media for a total of one hour and ten minutes a day now checking all my apps and posting new content.
Get Alone For Quiet Time
Get Alone For Quiet Time
The best times I have had are while driving my car to and from the gym or sitting on my back porch drinking a coffee and not saying anything. I make it a habit to sit alone in solitude daily with no interruptions from friends, spouse, kids, or even phone calls. These times are refreshing and help me reset my mind.
Read Your Bible & Pray
I am not suggesting that you read or pray for an hour, but if you can great. I would recommend at least 5-10 minutes a day to start. Don’t just pray and read your Bible. Take time to sit quietly and reflect on what you read, and listen to the silence and God will begin to speak to you. He speaks through many means: thoughts, images, impressions, dreams, visions, movies, songs, anything. Don’t put God in a box. He will speak to you anyway He chooses.
Listen To Music
When I get alone, I enjoy listening to worship music or multiple types. As a drummer of 30+ years I tend to listen to a variety of styles and genres of music. Honestly, I don’t listen to R&B or Rap. I have a strong tendency towards Big Band, Swing, Christian Rock, Metal, or Worship. On a few occasions, I put the Country station on using the Pandora app.
My Thot: do whatever is necessary to reset your mind and get rid of stinking, negative, thinking. I know there is a lot of information out there. Some information is bad, while a majority can be quite good. Do your research. Pray about what you read and what sources you are listening to. I can only recommend running everything by God in prayer before you make a decision. You would be surprised how many mistakes or pitfalls I’ve missed, all because I sought after God’s View and His thoughts on what I should do. My challenge to you is this week ask God to show you Himself strong in your life and help you in your decision making process.
