My Life Experience
A few things I've observed and dislike (ok, HATE) seeing in the gym is a “trainer” or “coach” who has never been morbidly obese making a person who is 250+ lbs do box jumps or one leg squats. Sorry, I am very passionate about the safety of clients, who I train, who are morbidly obese. The trainers and coaches who have never had an issue with obesity have no right or business training someone who is morbidly obese, in my opinion. They don’t know how to deal with issues and other factors that obese people deal with on a day-to-day basis.
Many trainers or coaches have only had 20-30 lbs to lose and have never had the issues that someone like myself has had: for example - breaking furniture because of their weight, going to a restaurant and having to ask if they have tables with chairs instead of a booth, needing an extension belt or some sort of special accommodation so they can fit into clothes, a car, or a plane seat, or not being able to walk far distances or stand to cook meals or wash dishes, etc.
The gym is not a meat market! I see so many male trainers at gyms who are flirting or hitting on single ladies while they are suppose to be training them. They tend to be very “hands-on” touchy and they try to get dates and become “a trainer with benefits” (sexual benefits). This is not professional. I've seen first-hand that some male trainers tend to give all their time and attention to the good looking women and ignore the women who aren’t in the best shape. One trainer I observed was working with an older client and was not paying attention to her form - she could have gotten hurt. He was looking around the gym as if he was bored; yet, when the young, sassy, youthful, “pleasing to the eye” woman came in he gave her all the attention he could. What a disrespectful jerk. The trainer should have given as much attention to the older client as he did the younger client. I believe this employee got fired for his conduct. It's a good thing, too. He may have studied the training manual and took the test to become certified, but he didn't have heart, passion, or the conviction one needs to see lives changed and transformed.
My Thot: having a personal trainer or coach who knows their stuff is very important. They should have life experience. They don’t need to have gone to a university or have certification, and they better have more than head knowledge - they better have heart, integrity, character, etc. Trainers and coaches need to be upright, not treat clients differently because they are lonely and want a date (dude, there is an app for this). Anyway, watch out for those types of trainers or coaches. Again, INTEGRITY is extremely important in hiring or getting a personal trainer or coach.
