BACK TO THE BASICS

A long, long time ago
in a land far away… NO, no, sorry this is not the opening to STAR WARS. I am just remembering a time long ago (about 9 years) when I was watching foster kids (from my former marriage) eat scrambled eggs and toast. Like most normal 2 and 3 year old's, they had not mastered the skills required to eat without getting food on themselves or on the floor. Parents, it seems, are consistently going over the basics with kids, knowing that as they get older they will eventually be able to eat without much supervision and it will become second nature to them. The same goes for putting their clothes on.

This morning as I have my second cup of coffee, I have begun to think of how many Christ followers murmur and complain because they say they want more than milk; they want the solid foods (the meat). There is nothing wrong with wanting the meat of the Word, but as a Christ follower we should always be revisiting the basics, because this is the foundation that everything is built on. Heck, even in the fitness arena we make sure we have the basics nailed before moving on. So YES, as a believer we have to check for cracks in our foundation. Check for cracks that the enemy can use to exploit us because he can make those cracks into footholds, and then once he has us, he can use those footholds to develop strongholds that will ultimately tear us up.

“… enemy come to steal, to kill, and to destroy.”
John 10:10a

The problem is that some followers want more than Jesus. They understand that there are great mysteries in the Word (Gold Nuggets), but they forget that if you have Jesus you have full access to those things already. Wanting more than Jesus is to say He is not good enough. Man-O-Man I just want to warn you not to ever think there is anything more important than Jesus. He is the All in All and He is through All and in All. In other words: He is everything you or I will ever need! How much more do you need? Nothing! He is it!

My Thot for today is: revisit the basics and make sure your foundation is solid. Make sure your heart is steadfast in your knowledge, knowing that He is your everything. A book I would highly recommend is “Jesus Manifesto - Restoring the Supremacy and Sovereignty of Jesus Christ” by Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola.
